JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. — A traffic stop for an expired vehicle registration led to multiple drug charges after authorities said controlled substances were found during the stop and later at the Jackson County Jail.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy stopped a vehicle near Highway 71 South and Rocky Creek Road. A K-9 assisted during the investigation.
Deputies said they found a bag containing a white powdery substance concealed on the driver, identified as Misty Merriel. The substance tested positive for cocaine, according to the sheriff’s office.
Merriel was taken into custody and transported to the Jackson County Jail.
During the booking process, detention staff reportedly found additional controlled substances concealed on Merriel. The sheriff’s office said further testing identified the substances as fentanyl and hydrocodone.
Merriel was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of fentanyl, possession of hydrocodone and introduction of contraband into a county detention facility.
“The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to proactive enforcement and strong partnerships with our county corrections officers as we work together to keep illegal drugs and contraband out of our community,” the sheriff’s office said.
