DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Wallace Community College-Dothan marked America’s 250th anniversary with a Time Capsule Ceremony and America 250 cookouts on the Wallace Campus in Dothan and the Sparks Campus in Eufaula.
The Time Capsule Ceremony brought together students, faculty and staff to preserve a snapshot of life at the college in 2026. Wallace Community College-Dothan President Dr. Kathy Murphy delivered remarks before the commemorative time capsule was sealed for future generations.
Dr. Murphy and student representatives Kase Cole and Giselle Cortes participated in the ceremonial first shovels marking the placement of the capsule.
The time capsule contains messages from students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members, along with the college’s annual report, press releases, publications, current college data and other items documenting campus life. Many of the handwritten messages include personal reflections, hopes for the future, words of encouragement and reminders of the lasting impact of education, service and community.
As part of the ceremony, Dr. Murphy also sealed a personal letter to future generations focused on faith, freedom, courage, unity and service. Inspired by the nation’s founding documents and enduring symbols, the letter encourages those who open the capsule decades from now to remember the sacrifices that secured liberty, value the blessings of freedom, choose unity over division and leave a legacy of kindness and hope.
“May you always respect life, celebrate liberty, and embrace the happiness that comes in loving and serving others,” Dr. Murphy wrote.
The capsule is scheduled to be opened in 2076 as part of America’s 300th birthday celebration.
Following the ceremony, students and employees gathered for America 250 cookouts on both the Dothan and Eufaula campuses. Sponsored by Goodwyn Mills & Cawood, the events featured food, fellowship, patriotic decorations and photo opportunities celebrating the nation’s milestone anniversary.
The ceremony and cookouts were part of Wallace Community College-Dothan’s yearlong America 250 celebration, which included a highway cleanup, a food drive that provided nearly 300 meals to local families, presentations on Revolutionary War history in the Wiregrass, patriotic campus events, a screening of Hamilton, and opportunities for students, employees, alumni and community members to share Messages to the Future.
