WASHINGTON, D.C. (WDNews) — President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday restoring the Department of Defense’s former title, the Department of War, a name last used in 1947.
Trump said the move is intended to return to the nation’s military roots and reflect a stronger focus on victory. He argued the change underscores America’s strength, declaring that the country should “fight to win, not to lose.”
The original War Department was created in 1789 under President George Washington and directed military operations through World War II. It was reorganized into the Department of Defense following the war.
Administration officials said the rebranding will be phased in over time, with updates to materials made as supplies are replenished to limit costs. Trump emphasized that the shift is symbolic, aimed at reinforcing what he called the nation’s “warrior ethos.”
