DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — A Dothan man has been arrested after an early morning shooting left another man with a gunshot wound to the back, according to the Dothan Police Department.
According to Dothan Police Chief William E. Benny, officers received a report from a local hospital around 4 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, that a male victim had arrived with a gunshot wound to his back.
Responding officers were initially told the victim’s last known location was near the 200 block of West Powell Street. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate a crime scene. Investigators then went to the hospital to begin the investigation.
Police said the investigation later determined the victim had been on a business property in the 700 block of North Oates Street.
According to Benny, a person living on the property saw an individual enter a vehicle on the property and fired one round from a handgun.
Police identified the suspect as 57-year-old David Tyrone Shaw of Dothan. Investigators said Shaw fired another round as the individual was running away, striking him in the back.
“Alabama law does not allow for use of deadly force on a subject to simply protect property,” Benny stated.
Shaw was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree assault.
Police did not provide additional information about the victim’s condition.
