OZARK, Ala. (WDNews) — Ozark Fire & Rescue welcomed two special visitors from Germany this week, giving firefighters the opportunity to share experiences and learn about fire service operations on opposite sides of the world.
Thomas Streitmatter and Jessica Puschmann, family friends of Ozark Fire & Rescue Firefighter Marin, stopped by the station while visiting the United States. Streitmatter serves with the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain, while Puschmann is also involved in emergency response in Germany.
During the visit, the pair presented Ozark Fire & Rescue with several gifts from their department, including a section of fire hose bearing their department’s name, uniform patches, a bunker gear patch and a department photograph. In return, Ozark Fire & Rescue presented the visitors with an Ozark Fire & Rescue patch and one of the department’s helmet fronts.
Firefighters spent time discussing how the fire service operates in Germany and comparing it to operations in Ozark. One of the biggest differences shared during the visit was that the German department is staffed entirely by volunteer firefighters.
The exchange gave both departments an opportunity to discuss the similarities and differences in firefighting, emergency response and serving their communities while building friendships across international borders.
Ozark Fire & Rescue thanked Streitmatter and Puschmann for visiting the station, for the thoughtful gifts and for sharing their experiences, and wished them safe travels home.
