DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — The City of Dothan is asking residents to weigh in on the future of residential garbage, trash and recycling services as officials review rising costs associated with the program.
According to the City of Dothan, the issue was discussed during the City Commission’s strategic planning session in April, where commissioners reviewed the financial challenges facing the city’s solid waste collection system.
City officials said residents currently pay $14.75 per month for garbage, trash and recycling collection, a rate that has remained unchanged since 2013. However, the city reports that the actual cost to provide those services now averages approximately $35.06 per household each month.
To make up the difference, city officials said the General Fund currently transfers about $6 million annually to support solid waste operations.
The topic was discussed further during a City Commission work session on June 11, where commissioners reviewed potential options for the future of the program.
According to the city, those options include possible service level adjustments, fee changes, recycling alternatives and other measures aimed at reducing costs while maintaining long-term sustainability.
City officials emphasized that no decisions have been made.
“We understand that discussions involving City services and fees can be challenging, which is why no decisions have been made and public input is being sought before moving forward,” the city stated.
Officials said community feedback will play a key role as the city evaluates available options.
“As City leaders continue evaluating these options, community input will play an important role in the process. Our goal is to find a solution that maintains quality services while being financially responsible and ensuring taxpayer dollars can continue supporting other important community needs such as road improvements, storm drainage projects, and public safety,” the city said.
