DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — According to the City of Dothan, city offices will be closed Friday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
City officials announced the closure in a social media post, noting that municipal offices will not be open for regular business that day.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday is observed annually on June 19 and marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Residents who need city services are encouraged to plan ahead for the one-day closure. Regular operations are expected to resume following the holiday.
The City of Dothan shared the announcement this week to remind residents of the upcoming office closure.
