BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WDNews) — Ruby Tilghman was crowned Miss Alabama 2026 on Saturday night, earning the opportunity to represent the state at the next Miss America competition.
Tilghman, who competed as Miss Birmingham, claimed the title after a week of competition that brought together contestants from across Alabama. The Miss Alabama competition is the official state preliminary to the Miss America program.
A graduate of the University of Alabama, Tilghman previously served as Miss University of Alabama 2025 and has been active in community service and educational outreach programs. Her platform work has included efforts focused on expanding opportunities and resources for students in Alabama communities.
In addition to the state title, the Miss Alabama program awards scholarships and provides contestants opportunities for professional development, community engagement and leadership training. According to the Miss Alabama organization, the winner receives scholarship assistance along with sponsor awards and services.
As Miss Alabama 2026, Tilghman will spend the coming year making appearances across the state, promoting her community service initiatives and serving as Alabama’s representative at the national Miss America competition.
The annual Miss Alabama competition was held in Birmingham and featured contestants from communities throughout the state competing in multiple phases of competition, including interviews, talent, evening wear, health and fitness, and on-stage questions.
Tilghman’s crowning marks the beginning of a year-long role representing Alabama while advocating for causes important to communities across the state.
