WICKSBURG, Ala. (WDNews) — Wicksburg High School has announced the hiring of Blake Gibson as the new head coach of the girls softball program.
School officials will host a meet-and-greet with Gibson on Tuesday, June 9, at 6 p.m. in the Wicksburg High School Library, giving students, parents and community members an opportunity to meet the program’s new leader.
Gibson brings an impressive playing and coaching résumé to the position. During her high school career, she earned four all-conference selections, three all-state honors and was named MVP of the 2018 North-South All-Star Game. She was also recognized as a Super 12 player twice and helped her team finish among the top three teams in the state for five years, including a state runner-up finish.
At the collegiate level, Gibson played at Liberty University, where she was part of a nationally ranked top-25 softball program. During her time there, the team won two conference championships and advanced to the Knoxville Regional finals. Gibson was also named to the 2021 ASUN All-Academic Team. She later continued her collegiate career at Troy University for two years.
Gibson’s coaching experience includes serving as an assistant coach at Wicksburg during the Panthers’ 2024 state championship season. In 2025, she joined Rehobeth High School as junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant coach. Most recently, she served as head coach at Carroll High School during the 2026 season.
In a statement following her hiring, Gibson expressed her excitement about returning to Wicksburg.
“I am honored and excited to be back as the Head Coach of the Wicksburg Girls Softball program,” Gibson said. “Wicksburg has always held a special place in my heart, and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead these young athletes.”
She said she is eager to begin building relationships with players and helping them grow both on and off the field.
“I can’t wait to get to work, build strong relationships, develop our players on and off the field, and continue growing this program into something special,” Gibson said.
Gibson also thanked school administrators and Coach Cox for the opportunity.
“Thank you to the administration and Coach Cox at Wicksburg High School for taking a chance on me and believing in me to lead this program successfully. The future is bright and I’m excited for what lies ahead!” she said.
Wicksburg officials said they are excited to welcome Gibson back to the program as the Panthers prepare for the upcoming softball season.
