(WDNews) — Some U.S. state quarters issued between 1999 and 2008 are now worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars due to rare errors, misprints or pristine condition, according to financebuzz.com.

The U.S. Mint released the 50 State Quarters Program over nearly a decade, honoring each state with a unique design. While most quarters remain worth face value, collectors are paying high prices for a small number of rare versions.

Among the most valuable is the 1999-S Delaware quarter. In perfect condition, some have sold for more than $1,000. The “S” mark shows the coin was struck in San Francisco.

A 2005 Minnesota quarter with a doubled die error — showing an extra or partial tree — can be worth between $500 and $700. The 2000 South Carolina quarter may exceed $500 if it has extra strikes or is in flawless condition.

Collectors also seek the 2004-D Wisconsin quarter with the “extra leaf” error on the corn design. In excellent condition, some have sold for about $1,000. The “D” indicates it was minted in Denver.

Other valuable coins include the 2000 New Hampshire quarter, which can top $500 in pristine shape, and the 1999-S New Jersey proof quarter. A rare version of that coin once sold at auction for $2,530.

The 1999-P Connecticut broadstruck quarter is among the rarest. If struck wider than normal due to a minting error, it can be worth more than $4,000. The “P” mark shows it was minted in Philadelphia.

A 2008-D Alaska quarter in pristine condition sold for more than $2,000 at auction in 2017, according to the report.

Alabama’s state quarter does not appear on the list of high-value coins. The Alabama quarter features Helen Keller and is the only state quarter to include braille lettering.
