(WDNews) — A Slocomb man was shot and killed by law enforcement early Wednesday morning following a high-speed chase in the Florida Panhandle, authorities confirmed.
According to reports, a Florida State Trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop in Washington County, Florida, when the driver fled. The pursuit occurred on State Road 79 near County Road 279 in the Vernon area, where the suspect was reportedly traveling more than 100 miles per hour in a posted 35 mph zone.
A second trooper and deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist. Authorities say a PIT maneuver was attempted, after which the suspect exited the vehicle and ran into a wooded area.
Troopers reported the suspect was armed and made statements referencing criminal charges and death row. Law enforcement said the suspect later threatened officers with a firearm while in the woods.
A Florida State Trooper fired shots, striking the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Joshua Haire of Slocomb.
The incident remains under investigation.
