NEWTON, Ala. (WDNews) – The Newton Volunteer Fire Department will host an Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Awareness Training on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the NVFD station, located at 27 Queen St. in Newton. The free training is designed to help first responders, educators, and community members better understand and respond to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism.
Organizers say the session will provide practical tools and insights to improve communication and support for individuals with IDD during both emergency and non-emergency situations. A sensory trailer will also be on-site to demonstrate calming spaces for autistic individuals and others with developmental disabilities.
Lunch will be provided, and donations will be accepted to help cover travel expenses.
