(WDNews) – The unofficial end of summer arrives Monday, Sept. 1, with Labor Day bringing a three-day weekend for many across the country and plenty of travelers hitting the road, according to AAA.
“Labor Day caps off summer travel and provides one final holiday weekend before the fall routine begins,” Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, said.
AAA reports Seattle and Vancouver, both popular cruise departure points, top the list of domestic and international destinations. Many travelers are also choosing closer getaways such as road trips to beaches and national parks.
Gas prices remain favorable for drivers. Last year’s national average for a gallon of regular was $3.33 on Labor Day, according to AAA.
Transportation data firm INRIX warns congestion will be heaviest in the afternoons and evenings, especially on Saturday. The company recommends traveling earlier in the day.

Thursday, Aug. 28: Best before 1 p.m., worst between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 29: Best before noon, worst between noon and 8 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 30: Best between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., worst between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 31: Best before 11 a.m., worst between noon and 5 p.m.

Monday, Sept. 1: Best before noon, worst between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Airports will also see heavy traffic, with Orlando, New York, Denver, and Atlanta among the top destinations for sightseeing and events. AAA says domestic round-trip flights are averaging $720, about 6% cheaper than last year.
