DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Wiregrass residents who subscribe to both Hulu and Disney+ will soon notice a major change. Disney announced this week that it plans to fully merge Hulu content into the Disney+ app by 2026, creating a single streaming platform for users nationwide.
The move is part of a broader strategy to simplify access and boost revenue, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger. The combined app will feature Hulu’s general-entertainment, news, and live sports programming alongside Disney+ content, including Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, and National Geographic.
For viewers in southeast Alabama and across the Wiregrass, this means fewer apps to manage and potentially more flexible pricing options. Iger said the change will also allow Disney to offer bundled advertising opportunities and streamline subscription plans.
While the standalone Hulu app will eventually be phased out, customers can continue subscribing to Hulu or Disney+ individually for now. Internationally, Hulu content will replace the Star section within the Disney+ interface.
Disney also announced it will launch a new ESPN app on Aug. 21. The app will be part of a streaming bundle with Disney+ and Hulu, available for $29.99 per month.
These changes come as Disney looks to better compete in a crowded streaming market and respond to shifting viewer habits including those in the Wiregrass.
