SAVANNAH, Ga. (WDNews) – Five soldiers were shot Wednesday during an active shooter situation at Fort Stewart, a major U.S. Army installation in southeast Georgia, according to a statement from the base.
The incident triggered an immediate lockdown on parts of the post, with officials urging all personnel in the affected area to stay inside and secure all windows and doors. All entry gates to Fort Stewart were also closed for safety.
The shooter was reported in the area of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, according to updates posted to Fort Stewart’s official social media. Emergency response teams quickly moved in to secure the area.
Three elementary schools located on the base were placed on lockdown, affecting nearly 1,400 students. Community Superintendent Brian Perry confirmed the status, while the Liberty County School System said three nearby off-base schools also enacted safety protocols out of caution.
Fort Stewart, located roughly 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River and home to the 3rd Infantry Division.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp confirmed he is in contact with law enforcement responding to the shooting. U.S. Representative Buddy Carter, who represents the area, said he is closely monitoring the situation.
Further details about the condition of the wounded soldiers or the status of the shooter have not yet been released. Authorities continue to investigate.
