DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — City leaders, community members, and sports enthusiasts gathered this morning for the official groundbreaking of the new Dothan Pickleball Complex. The ceremony took place at 9:00 a.m. at 1603 Stadium Street, where construction will soon begin on a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the region’s growing interest in the sport.
Hosted by Dothan Leisure Services, the event marked the start of an exciting new chapter in the city’s commitment to recreational development. The future complex will feature 25 covered courts, spectator space, and parking—making it one of the largest pickleball facilities in the Wiregrass region.
Mayor Mark Saliba expressed why this pickleball complex will benefit Dothan, “This is to connect our Wiregrass. We have other smaller cities that have their pickleball courts, it’s a way we can attract regional tournaments and be a big part and big player in sports tourism.”
Brandon Shoupe also spoke about the support of the Houston County Commission saying “Here is the 3 reasons why the Houston County Commission is 100% behind this project. One, the people in Houston County will have another option for entertainment. Two, this gives young people another reason to want to settle in Dothan and Houston County. We have to increase the options for recreation if we’re going to attract young people. Three, its going to bring economical vitality to Dothan.”
Pickleball, a rapidly growing sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has seen a surge in popularity across the country. City officials say the project reflects Dothan’s dedication to providing modern, inclusive recreational spaces for all ages.
