TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WDNews) — Michelin North America has announced plans to close its BFGoodrich tire manufacturing operations in Tuscaloosa by the end of 2028, a move expected to impact approximately 1,200 employees.
The company said the closure will take place in phases beginning in early 2027, with production gradually shifting to its facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Michelin said the decision was based on long-term business and manufacturing needs, including changes in the recreation and off-road tire market and the company’s production strategy.
The Tuscaloosa plant has operated for decades and has been one of the area’s largest manufacturing employers. The company said production will continue during the transition period, and employees will remain at work as operations are gradually reduced over the next several years.
Michelin plans to work with employee representatives throughout the process and provide support for workers affected by the closure.
Local leaders called the announcement a significant loss for the community and said efforts are already underway to support employees and explore future opportunities for the site once operations come to an end.
The planned closure represents one of the largest manufacturing workforce reductions announced in Alabama in recent years. The company said it remains committed to assisting employees during the transition while evaluating long-term plans for the property.
