ELBA, Ala. (WDNews) — Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) and Elba residents are mourning the death of freshman football player Emanuell Cooks who passed away Friday, Sept. 19, from medical complications following a football game.
Cooks, who had graduated from Elba High School earlier this year, played a game against Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss. the night before his passing.
Cooks was known in his hometown as a standout athlete in both football and basketball. He began his freshman season this year as an offensive lineman for the MDCC Trojans.
“Our entire Trojan family is devastated by this loss,” said MDCC President Dr. Steven Jones. “At this time, our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Emanuell’s family, teammates, coaches, and friends. We will come together as a community to support one another through this tragedy.”
The college said counseling and support services are available to students, faculty, and staff as they grieve. Officials also asked for privacy for Cooks’ family and the campus community during this time.
