DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) – Wiregrass Pets Rescue and Adoption is hosting a “Clear the Shelter” adoption event Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at its new facility on 2638 Hartford Highway.
Marketing and Events Coordinator Casey Green said the event is a chance to get as many pets as possible into new homes before the transition from the current Dothan Animal Shelter.
“One of the biggest differences here is that we will serve all of Houston County, not just Dothan,” Green said. “Animal control from smaller towns and unincorporated areas will report here going forward.”
The new shelter includes six free-roaming cat rooms, more than 100 kennels, a walking trail for dogs, and plans for a robust foster and volunteer program.
In addition to adoptions, the shelter will accept donations of crates, traps, carriers, and other supplies during Saturday’s event.
Wiregrass Pets has already hosted its first volunteer orientation, drawing more than 65 people. Green said future programs will expand to include teens and children, offering opportunities such as reading to animals, making treats or helping with shelter activities.
The shelter’s official opening date has not yet been announced, as staff training and final construction work are still underway. A soft opening is expected in the coming weeks.
