MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDNews) — As football season kicks off across Alabama, state health leaders are reminding fans to stay safe while enjoying the games.
State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris said sporting events bring together families, students, athletes and spectators, but safety should remain a top priority whether at the stadium, gym or on the road.
Officials urge fans to practice safe driving, buckle up and allow extra travel time on game days. Tailgaters are encouraged to keep foods at proper temperatures, limit alcohol consumption and drink plenty of water.
Heat and humidity remain a concern in early fall. Health experts recommend wearing sunscreen, hats, and comfortable clothing, and staying alert for signs of heat-related illness. Night games may also require layers or rain gear.
Spectators with health conditions should be aware that the stress and excitement of competition can raise blood pressure, sometimes leading to heart problems. Symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness or shortness of breath should be taken seriously.
Fans are also encouraged to watch for slips, trips and falls at crowded stadiums and to avoid confrontations with rival fans. Harris urged spectators to set a positive example for young athletes by maintaining respectful behavior toward players, coaches, and officials.
“Don’t fumble when it comes to health and safety,” Harris said. “By being prepared, Alabamians can enjoy the excitement of the season and return home safely.”
