DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Sunset Memorial Park will host a community document shredding event and pet supplies drive on Friday, August 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The free event will take place at Sunset Memorial Park, located at 1700 Barrington Road. Organizers encourage residents to bring sensitive documents, such as those containing financial or medical information, to be safely and securely shredded.
A 2017 study from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimated that identity thieves stole $16 billion in 2016. They recommend shredding documents with personal details instead of throwing them in the trash as a key step in preventing identity theft.
In addition to shredding, the event will also collect pet supply donations for local shelters. Items such as food, toys and cleaning supplies are welcome.
