DOTHAN, Ala.(WDNews) – The Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) has received a $5,000 grant from Alabama Power to help launch Studio 126, a free weekly after-school art program for teens ages 13 to 16.
Set to begin this fall, the program will serve youth from across the five-county Wiregrass area, providing a safe and inclusive space for creative exploration at the museum. WMA leaders say the program’s flexible, student-led format will allow participants to work on self-directed projects and experiment with different art materials, with guidance from a museum educator and a studio artist.
“We believe Studio 126 has the potential to fill a significant gap in after-school programming for teens, particularly those who may not otherwise have access to enriching, creative experiences due to financial or geographic barriers,” said WMA Executive Director Dana-Marie Lemmer. “This generous support from Alabama Power helps us meet our goal of providing teens with a consistent space for creativity, connection, and personal growth.”
The funding will cover materials, staffing, and studio operations, ensuring the program remains free for all participants. In addition to building artistic skills, Studio 126 will aim to help teens develop confidence, problem-solving abilities and other soft skills through collaboration and peer interaction.
WMA says the initiative reflects its ongoing mission to inspire lifelong engagement with the arts while expanding educational opportunities for youth in the Wiregrass.
