DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — The Wiregrass Peanut Project has arrived at its next milestone. Seedlings cultivated in Dothan’s classrooms are now headed to the Kathy L. Chan Greenhouse on HudsonAlpha’s Huntsville campus. There, genomic experts will nurture and crossbreed them to develop hardier peanut strains.
Launched in 2022 as a partnership between HudsonAlpha and Dothan City Schools, the project aims to leverage cutting‑edge genomics to create disease‑ and drought‑resistant peanut varieties. Students from multiple Wiregrass schools have helped plant, sequence DNA, and analyze traits in a hands‑on learning experience.
At HudsonAlpha’s flagship rooftop greenhouse in Huntsville, the project’s next phase involves scientists running controlled crossbreeding trials to enhance plant resilience. According to lead investigator Dr. Josh Clevenger, student‑identified traits will be rapidly incorporated into new peanut lines — speeding up what traditionally takes decades.
The overall effort, called “With Innovative Regional Experience Growing Real Advancements through Student Scientists,” brings together high school students, educators, and research professionals. Teachers have already received training at HudsonAlpha’s Huntsville campus, preparing them to integrate the project into classroom curriculums.
Since late 2022, HudsonAlpha’s Wiregrass Initiative has aimed to connect genomics research, agricultural education, and economic growth throughout the region. The greenhouse expansion marks another step toward establishing a biotech hub in southeast Alabama.
