COVINGTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDNews) — The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the murder and first-degree burglary convictions of an Evergreen man sentenced to life in prison.
According to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, Frank Cortez McQueen, 46, was convicted April 3, 2025, in Covington County Circuit Court.
Evidence presented at trial showed the case stemmed from a November 2020 fight at a convenience store in Andalusia involving victim Micah Coon and Tyquise Jenkins.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, after the fight ended, Jenkins led a group of people, including his uncle McQueen, to Coon’s home.
Authorities said Jenkins forced his way into the home, and McQueen and several others followed him inside. The group then attacked Coon, who was eventually shot and killed.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, one witness testified to seeing McQueen holding a firearm and did not see anyone else with a gun at that time.
Covington County District Attorney Walt Merrell and Chief Assistant District Attorney Nikki Stephens prosecuted the case and obtained guilty verdicts for murder and first-degree burglary. McQueen was sentenced to life in prison.
McQueen appealed and sought to have his convictions reversed.
The Alabama Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division argued that the convictions should be upheld. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the convictions in a decision issued Aug. 14.
Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Marc A. Starrett for handling the appeal and thanked Merrell and his staff for their work on the case.
