DOTHAN, Ala (WDNews) A new law in Alabama now allows most patients to see a physical therapist without needing a referral from a doctor. This is great news for those experiencing pain, as they can start getting the care they need right away.

As of June 1, 2024, Alabama residents can see a physical therapist without needing a referral from a doctor, thanks to this new law. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Who Can Treat You: Physical therapists must have a Doctorate in Physical Therapy or a Master’s degree with 10 years of experience.

2. Visit Limits: You can see a physical therapist without a referral for up to 30 days or 11 visits. If you don’t get better, you’ll need a referral to continue.

3. Extra Training: Therapists treating patients without a referral need to complete two extra hours of continuing education each year.

4. Paying Cash: If you pay cash for your treatments, you can access physical therapy without any restrictions.

This new law makes it easier to get physical therapy when you need it. For more details, visit the Alabama Secretary of State’s website or contact the Alabama Board of Physical Therapy.

This change offers a big opportunity for patients to take control of their health. While many people have relied on doctors to recommend specific physical therapists, patients can now seek out the care they need on their own.
