Shark Attacks Prompt Beach Warnings in Walton and Bay Counties

June 8, 2024

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL. (WDNews) – If you have plans for the beach this weekend you need to know this vital information. Bay County beaches are now under strict safety warnings following multiple shark attacks reported Friday afternoon in neighboring Walton County. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) responded by posting double red flags on local beaches yesterday, indicating a complete ban on entering the water.

Sheriff Tommy Ford, in discussions with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), revealed that the attacks may be linked to the seasonal presence of bait fish near the shore, attracting sharks to the area.

Today, in collaboration with Bay County and Panama City Beach officials, the BCSO has updated beach warnings to single red flags and purple flags. The single red flags indicate high hazard conditions, while purple flags warn of dangerous marine life.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution when considering entering the Gulf waters or allowing children to swim this weekend.
