DOTHAN, Ala (WDNews) — Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. is recalling whole cucumbers shipped from May 17th to May 21st due to potential Salmonella contamination. This recall affects shipments to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Salmonella can cause serious infections, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Severe cases may lead to arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

So far, the CDC reports 162 people have fallen ill, with over 50 hospitalizations linked to these cucumbers. Fresh Start urges consumers to discard the affected produce to prevent further infections. When in doubt, just throw it out.
