DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Alabama State Sen. Billy Beasley presented a Community Service Grant to Wallace Community College-Dothan President Dr. Kathy L. Murphy to support planned renovations and improvements at the college’s Sparks Campus, according to WCCD.
The amount of the grant was not provided.
The funding will help advance the college’s plans to modernize learning environments and create more welcoming spaces for students.
Located in Eufaula, the Sparks Campus provides academic transfer education, career and technical education, workforce training, adult education and student support services to students across southeast Alabama.
Beasley said supporting the campus is an investment in the region’s future.
“Wallace Community College is an essential piece of the educational and economic future of our area,” Beasley said. “Our community colleges play a critical role in preparing students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in today’s workforce. I am proud to support the improvements planned for the Sparks Campus because these investments will benefit students, employers, and communities throughout the region for years to come.”
Beasley also emphasized the connection between community colleges, workforce development and economic growth.
“Economic development and workforce development go hand in hand,” Beasley said. “When we invest in our students and give them the opportunity to receive high-quality education and training close to home, we are also investing in the future of our communities.”
Murphy thanked Beasley for supporting the college and its Sparks Campus students.
“We are extremely grateful to Senator Beasley for his generous support and his belief in the future of the Sparks Campus,” Murphy said. “Senator Beasley’s contribution, the first external gift dedicated to this project, is an important investment in our students and in our communities.
“Senator Beasley understands that when we strengthen our community colleges, we strengthen the workforce, and ultimately, the economic vitality of the entire region.”
Murphy said the planned renovations are focused on improving the student experience while helping the campus meet the changing needs of businesses and industries.
“Our students deserve facilities that reflect the quality of education and training we provide,” Murphy said. “The improvements we are planning will help create spaces where students can learn, connect, and prepare for their futures. We are excited about what these renovations will mean for our Sparks Campus students and for the areas that depend on Wallace to provide educational and workforce opportunities close to home.”
The Sparks Campus is part of WCCD’s regional mission to provide education and training opportunities across southeast Alabama. The college continues to expand its academic, career and technical, health sciences and workforce programs based on the needs of students and regional employers.
“Community colleges are uniquely positioned to respond to the needs of both students and employers,” Murphy said. “Our responsibility is to make sure our students have access to the education, training, resources, and facilities they need to be successful.
