DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing children fighting cancer, remembering those who have been lost and supporting families whose lives have been changed by a diagnosis.
For Meredith’s Miracles, those families are much more than statistics.
The organization says it has already helped 57 children and their families through their medical journeys in 2026. That number has surpassed the 51 children Meredith’s Miracles helped during all of 2025.
Behind each number is a child who should be focused on school, playing with friends, laughing and simply being a kid. Instead, these children and their families are facing treatments, surgeries, medical appointments and trips away from home for care.
For their parents and loved ones, a cancer diagnosis can mean long days and sleepless nights filled with fear, uncertainty and hope.
Meredith’s Miracles works to ease part of that burden by helping families with expenses associated with traveling for their child’s medical care. The organization continues assisting families with medical trips as they navigate treatment.
“57 children. 57 families whose lives have been changed,” Meredith’s Miracles shared. “57 families facing fear, uncertainty, long days, long nights, countless appointments, treatments, surgeries, and miles traveled in search of the best care for their child.”
But the organization says those 57 children are not simply a number.
“We know their names. We know their stories. We love these children. We care about their families. And we are honored to stand beside them during some of the darkest moments of their lives.”
Throughout September, gold ribbons and the color gold are used to bring awareness to childhood cancer and the children and families affected by it.
Meredith’s Miracles is asking the Wiregrass community to join that effort by wearing gold, sharing messages of support, praying for children and families facing cancer and reminding them they are not alone.
“Because no family should have to walk this road alone,” the organization shared.
For Meredith’s Miracles, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is about the children behind the numbers — every child fighting, every parent praying, every family hoping and every miracle still to come.
This September, they wear gold for all of them.
