ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WDNews) — The City of Enterprise is encouraging residents to prepare their homes, families and communities for emergencies as National Preparedness Month begins.
According to the city, September is recognized as National Preparedness Month through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Ready Campaign. The 2026 theme is “American Stand Ready.”
City officials said preparedness can begin with four basic steps: making an emergency plan, building a supply kit, staying informed and helping others in the community.
Residents are encouraged to talk with family members about what to do during an emergency, including where to meet, how to stay in contact and how to evacuate if necessary. Plans should also account for pets and any special needs within the household.
Emergency kits should include nonperishable food, water, flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, first aid supplies and portable phone chargers. The city also recommends regularly checking supplies and replacing expired items.
Residents should also have multiple ways to receive emergency information, including local alerts, wireless emergency alerts and NOAA Weather Radio.
The city said community preparedness can include learning CPR and basic first aid, knowing how to use a fire extinguisher and getting to know neighbors.
Residents interested in additional training can participate in the Coffee County Community Emergency Response Team, or CC-CERT, program.
According to the city, CC-CERT provides hands-on training in disaster preparedness, fire safety, triage, CPR, light search and rescue and other emergency-response skills.
CC-CERT volunteers have assisted local emergency responders during emergencies and searches for missing people. The city said volunteers were among those who helped during the extensive 2026 search of the Coffee County landfill for missing Enterprise toddler Genesis Reid.
Volunteers have also been incorporated into the city’s severe weather and extreme-temperature preparedness efforts.
The next CC-CERT training sessions are scheduled for Nov. 6-7 and Nov. 14 at Central Fire Station, 301 Plaza Drive in Enterprise.
The course costs $25, which includes an emergency response bag after completion. Participants must attend all required sessions to earn certification. Those younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
