DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — A Wiregrass agency is warning Medicare beneficiaries about an unsolicited letter that could put their personal information at risk.
According to SARCOA Area Agency on Aging, the agency has been made aware of a letter being sent to Medicare beneficiaries advertising an at-home Medicare Annual Wellness Visit.
The letter reportedly instructs recipients to call a phone number or scan a QR code to complete the visit.
“If you receive a letter like this, do NOT scan the QR code or use the contact information provided in the letter,” SARCOA said. “QR codes from unverified sources can direct you to fraudulent websites or put your personal information and device security at risk.”
SARCOA is encouraging Medicare beneficiaries to be cautious with unexpected communications claiming to be connected to Medicare.
“If you receive unexpected communication claiming to be from Medicare and aren’t sure it’s legitimate, contact SARCOA’s Senior Medicare Patrol at 334-793-6843 to verify it before providing any information or taking action,” the agency said.
SARCOA’s Senior Medicare Patrol works with Medicare beneficiaries and their families to help prevent, detect and report health care fraud, errors and abuse.
“Please share this warning,” SARCOA said. “The more people who recognize scams like this, the harder it becomes for scammers to succeed.”
