DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Downtown Dothan received statewide recognition during the 13th annual Main Street Alabama Awards of Excellence Banquet in Enterprise, according to Downtown Dothan.
The Awards of Excellence committee recognized Downtown Dothan for receiving a proclamation from Gov. Kay Ivey. The recognition comes during Downtown Dothan’s first year as a designated Main Street Alabama community.
“Last night was a wonderful reminder of why this work matters,” said Main Street Alabama President and State Coordinator Mary Helmer Wirth. “It is an honor for me to present the awards and seeing the pride each community has in its Main Street district was truly inspiring. Our local Main Street programs are doing meaningful work across Alabama, and the Main Street Four-Point Approach continues to help communities build on what makes them special while preserving the places that tell their story.”
Downtown Dothan Executive Director Brinley Culbreth said attending the event as one of Alabama’s newest designated Main Street communities made the night particularly meaningful.
“Attending the Awards of Excellence as one of Alabama’s newest designated Main Street communities made the evening especially meaningful for Downtown Dothan,” Culbreth said. “It was inspiring to see what communities across the state have accomplished through the Main Street program, and we’re excited about what this designation means for the future of our downtown. To already have Downtown Dothan recognized during our first year makes us even more excited for what’s ahead.”
Clay Dempsey, a Downtown Dothan board member and director of performing arts for the city of Dothan, also reflected on the event.
“Great night at the Main Street Alabama Awards Banquet celebrating communities across our state. We’re building something special in Dothan, and we can’t wait to bring one of these awards home,” Dempsey said.
Main Street Alabama is a nonprofit organization focused on revitalizing downtown and commercial districts through public-private partnerships, community involvement and strategies aimed at creating jobs, attracting investment and encouraging growth.
According to Downtown Dothan, Main Street Alabama includes 36 designated communities and 34 network communities across the state.
