DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Dothan City Commissioners are at a stalemate over a proposed increase to the city’s solid waste fees, leaving the current rate unchanged for now.
The commission voted 3-3 on the proposal, with Commissioner Phillip Kirksey absent. The tie vote created a stalemate, meaning the proposed increase will not take effect at this time.
Monthly solid waste bills will remain at $14.75, the same rate that has been in place for the past 13 years.
It was recommended increasing the monthly fee to $20, with additional increases planned over the next several years. The proposal would also increase the cost of additional garbage cans and eliminate curbside recycling.
City leaders say the solid waste fund has required about $65 million from Dothan’s general fund since 2013.
For now, the stalemate means residents will continue paying the current $14.75 monthly rate, and the proposed changes to garbage and recycling services will not move forward.
