DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Dangerous heat is settling across Alabama, with forecasters warning the combination of high temperatures and humidity could push heat index values well into the triple digits through the weekend and into next week.
The National Weather Service says a long-duration period of hazardous heat is underway across the region. In the Wiregrass, a Heat Advisory remains in effect as “feels-like” temperatures could climb as high as 112 degrees.
The heat is not limited to southeast Alabama. Central Alabama is facing temperatures ranging from the mid-90s to lower 100s, with heat index values approaching 110 degrees. Forecasters say the prolonged heat could become dangerous for anyone without adequate cooling or hydration.
North Alabama is also under a Heat Advisory through Monday. The National Weather Service in Huntsville warns dangerous heat could continue through the middle of next week, with some areas facing major to extreme heat impacts.
The Wiregrass could see little relief during the overnight hours. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee says very warm nighttime temperatures will continue during the heat wave, limiting the body’s ability to recover from daytime heat.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas.
People should also check on elderly relatives, neighbors and others who may not have reliable air conditioning. Children and pets should never be left inside a parked vehicle, even for a short period of time.
Anyone working outdoors should take the heat seriously. Heat-related illness can develop quickly during prolonged exposure, especially when heat index values climb above 100 degrees.
The dangerous heat is expected to remain a concern into next week across much of Alabama, including the Wiregrass.
