MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDNews) — Governor Kay Ivey has officially proclaimed Aug. 1, 2026, as Will Roberts Day in Alabama, honoring the life and legacy of 15-year-old William “Will” Roberts, who passed away July 23 after a courageous battle with stage 4 bone cancer.
Will, the son of ALEA State Bureau of Investigation Capt. Jason Roberts and his wife, Brittney, fought osteosarcoma for more than 18 months. During his battle, his story inspired thousands of people across Alabama and the nation, generating an outpouring of prayers, encouragement and financial support that helped his family pursue experimental treatment in California.
The governor’s proclamation recognizes Will’s courage, faith and lasting impact while honoring every child who has battled or is currently battling childhood cancer.
“Alabama is remembering Will as a brave young man whose courage inspired us all,” Ivey said. “God has called him home, where he is healed and with our Savior. I am proud to honor his life well-lived by officially proclaiming Will Roberts Day in the state of Alabama. He inspired me, and he inspired us all.”
The proclamation states that Will’s legacy extends beyond his battle with cancer, describing him as a beloved son, devoted Christian and an example of strength, hope and faith. It also notes that his life united thousands of strangers in prayer, encouragement and community.
According to the proclamation, Aug. 1 is designated as Will Roberts Day in honor of his life and “in recognition of every child who has battled or is battling childhood cancer across our state.”
Will’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026.
