DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — A tropical system has formed in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen as it moves toward the northern Gulf Coast. While the system is not currently expected to bring hurricane conditions to the Wiregrass, residents should prepare for periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, and the possibility of localized flooding.
The greatest impact across southeast Alabama is expected to be heavy rainfall beginning late Sunday and continuing into Monday. Rain bands associated with the tropical system could produce periods of intense rainfall, leading to water collecting on roadways and flooding in low-lying or poor drainage areas.
Gusty winds will also be possible, especially during heavier showers and thunderstorms. While widespread wind damage is not anticipated at this time, isolated downed tree limbs and scattered power outages cannot be ruled out.
Motorists are encouraged to use extra caution during heavy rain, allow additional travel time, and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even a small amount of moving water can be dangerous.
Residents should also secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and stay informed as the forecast may change. Tropical systems can shift in track or intensity, and additional updates are expected as the storm moves closer to the Gulf Coast.
