OPP, Ala. (WDNews) — Two people were killed and two others were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Florala Highway and the U.S. Highway 84 Bypass, according to multiple reports.
According to the reports, officers responded to the crash at approximately 1:08 p.m. on July 16. Responding officers found both vehicles with heavy damage as personnel from the Opp Fire Department and Haynes Ambulance Service began treating the injured.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2021 GMC Sierra driven by a 73-year-old woman from Andalusia turned left on a red traffic signal into the path of a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 72-year-old man from Troy.
A 75-year-old male passenger in the GMC Sierra, also from Andalusia, was pronounced dead at the scene. An 80-year-old female passenger in the Chevrolet Silverado, from Troy, also died at the scene.
The reports state the driver of the GMC Sierra was airlifted to HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was transported by ambulance before being airlifted to Southeast Health Medical Center. The identities of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
While first responders and law enforcement officers were investigating the initial crash and traffic was stopped, a second collision occurred just west of the original crash scene.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2022 Hyundai Elantra driven by a motorist from Elba failed to stop for traffic and struck a 2017 Nissan Rogue from Enterprise. The impact pushed the Nissan Rogue into a 2017 Ram 1500 pickup from Opp.
The drivers of the Hyundai Elantra and Nissan Rogue, along with a passenger in the Ram pickup, were transported to a local hospital with injuries believed to be minor.
The crashes remain under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Opp Police Department. No additional information has been released.
