DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — The City of Dothan has officially been recognized as a Main Street Alabama community, receiving a Governor’s Commendation signed by Gov. Kay Ivey on July 16.
The recognition places Dothan among more than 30 communities across Alabama participating in the Main Street Alabama program, which works to preserve historic downtowns while encouraging economic growth, investment and revitalization.
The designation recognizes Dothan’s commitment to revitalizing its historic downtown through the Main Street Alabama program, which focuses on economic development, preservation, design and promotion of traditional business districts.
In the commendation, Gov. Ivey noted that community leaders and residents rallied together to earn the designation by demonstrating their commitment to Main Street America’s nationally recognized Four-Point Approach. The program emphasizes organization, design, promotion and economic vitality to strengthen downtown districts.
The governor also highlighted the statewide impact of the Main Street Alabama program. Since 2014, participating communities have reported more than $1.17 billion in private investment, $247.6 million in public investment, the creation of 1,539 new businesses, 4,645 new jobs, and nearly 267,000 volunteer hours.
