DOTHAN — SpectraCare Health Systems is encouraging Wiregrass residents to safely clean out their medicine cabinets during a Prescription Drug Takeback event scheduled for Thursday, July 16.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kinsey Cove Apartments in Dothan. Community members are invited to bring expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications to be properly disposed of at no cost.
According to SpectraCare Health Systems, the takeback event is designed to provide a safe and convenient way for residents to dispose of medications that are no longer needed. Proper disposal helps reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, prescription drug misuse and theft while also preventing medications from being improperly discarded in household trash or flushed down sinks and toilets.
Unused medications left in homes can become a safety hazard, especially for children, teenagers and older adults. Health officials routinely encourage residents to remove outdated or unnecessary medications from their homes to help prevent accidental ingestion and unauthorized use.
Prescription drug takeback events also help protect the environment. When medications are thrown away or flushed, they can enter landfills and waterways, where they may have harmful effects on wildlife and water quality. Using an approved drug disposal program helps ensure medications are destroyed safely and responsibly.
