DOTHAN, Ala. — Three people have been charged after a serious crash in Dothan that police say happened while two vehicles were street racing through residential streets.
According to the Dothan Police Department, the crash happened just before 2 p.m. on June 28 at the intersection of South Lena Street and West Lafayette Street.
Police said a 2016 Toyota Camry, driven by a 12-year-old juvenile, ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle that was traveling through the intersection without a stop sign.
A 14-year-old juvenile passenger in the Camry was ejected during the crash. Police said the teen was first taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, then transferred to a hospital in North Alabama, where the teen remains in critical condition.
During the investigation, police said surveillance video showed the Camry and a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, driven by Jadyn Ruth Smith, 20, of Daleville, racing through the residential streets before the crash.
Investigators said the video also showed the passenger who was ejected sitting on the rear door windowsill of the Camry before the crash. Police said Smith’s vehicle also had two juvenile passengers sitting on the rear door windowsills while the vehicle was being driven recklessly.
The 12-year-old juvenile was charged with four counts of first-degree assault and placed in the Southeast Alabama Diversion Center.
Smith was also charged with four counts of first-degree assault and booked into the Houston County Jail with bonds totaling $120,000.
Police said Brenda Bragg Raines, 72, of Dothan, the legal guardian of the 12-year-old, was charged with one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Investigators said Raines allowed the juvenile to take the vehicle with permission.
Raines was booked into the Houston County Jail with a $6,000 bond.
“The video shows the vehicles operating in an extremely reckless manner and in a manner that showed a complete disregard for the value of human life,” police said.
“Each driver is responsible for the safety of passengers and others on the road when they drive on the streets of the City of Dothan.”
