MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday that she has approved a request for the Alabama National Guard to support operations surrounding the America 250 events in Washington, D.C., as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary.
“One month from today, our nation will mark 250 years of freedom. Without hesitation, the Alabama National Guard is proud to support Freedom 250 events,” Ivey said. “We live in the greatest state in the greatest nation on Earth, and I thank these Alabama patriots for answering the call to serve their country.”
According to the governor’s office, 150 Soldiers from the 123rd Quartermaster Company based in Arab, Ala., will assist with support operations tied to major public events in the nation’s capital. The soldiers will work alongside the District of Columbia National Guard and civil servants throughout the National Capital Region in coordination with the National Guard Bureau.
ALNG Adjutant General Maj. Gen. David Pritchett said the mission reflects the Guard’s long tradition of service.
“From the founding of our country to the freedoms we are still blessed to defend today, America’s 250th anniversary is a powerful reminder of the service and sacrifice that make greatness possible,” Pritchett said. “The Alabama National Guard is a proud part of that history and tradition, and we are honored to support all the people of the United States as our nation marks this monumental milestone.”
The Alabama soldiers are expected to arrive in Washington before July 4 celebrations begin and will serve a 90-day rotation.
The Alabama National Guard has served in a dual role since 1807, supporting military operations overseas while also assisting civil authorities during national events, disasters and emergency response missions across Alabama and the nation.
