(WDNews) – A package of bills aimed at protecting energy costs for Alabama residents was taken up Monday by the Alabama House Committee on Transportation, Utilities and Infrastructure.
The committee considered House Bills 403, 399 and 392, which are being framed by state leaders as part of the Alabama Affordability Protection Plan. The proposals focus on keeping utility costs low while maintaining the state’s competitiveness for future economic development.
Gov. Kay Ivey voiced support for the legislation ahead of the committee’s review, saying affordable utilities play a key role in keeping Alabama an attractive place to live, work and raise a family.
“For Alabama to remain the best state to live, work and raise a family, we have to grow the state, while keeping our cost of living low,” Ivey said. “That certainly includes our utilities, and we are seeing discussions in states around the country about best ways to lower those bills for families.”
Ivey said the package of bills is intended to protect energy costs for Alabamians while supporting continued economic growth across the state. She also pointed to recent appointments to the Alabama Public Service Commission as part of broader efforts to strengthen oversight of utilities.
The governor thanked state lawmakers for addressing what she described as a timely and relevant issue for Alabama residents and businesses.
