Dothan, Ala. (WDNews) – Phone users across the Wiregrass and central Alabama will soon need to adjust how they dial. A new area code is being introduced, and 10-digit dialing will become the new normal.
State regulators say the 483 area code will officially launch on February 23, 2026, as the current 334 area code nears full capacity. The Alabama Public Service Commission expects available 334 numbers to run out by late 2026.
While existing phone numbers won’t change, everyone in the region will be required to start using 10-digit dialing—area code plus number—for all calls beginning January 23, 2026.
Officials recommend updating saved contacts, security systems, and other devices before the new rules take effect.
