DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) – Dr. Garrick Askew has been selected as the next superintendent of Dothan City Schools following a vote by the Dothan City Board of Education during its regular meeting Tuesday evening.
The motion to hire Dr. Askew was initiated by District 1 Board Member Brenda Guilford. The board chose Askew as their top pick in a 4–2 vote. One board member’s vote was not recorded.
The superintendent search began in April with help from the Alabama Association of School Boards. The board narrowed a pool of 42 applicants down to five in early June, then selected two finalists for interviews before making their final decision.
Currently, Dr. Askew is Assistant Superintendent of Operations at Clarke County Schools in Georgia. He has also served as Executive Director of School Operation Support and Executive Director of High Schools in the Paulding County (Ga.) School District. In addition, he was a principal for various public schools in Georgia for 14 years.
Dr. Askew earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia in 2004. He also holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University in Secondary Education. In 2000, he began his career in education as a science teacher at Inner City Charter Middle School in Ohio.
