Troy Quarterback Breakdown

The Troy Trojans were a big surprise in 2022 under first year head coach Jon Sumrall. After a very successful run by Neal Brown from 2015-19 that included three straight 10-win seasons, the Trojans fell on hard times after he left for West Virginia. Over the next three seasons under his replacement Chip Lindsey Troy never got past five wins. Sumrall rebuilt the Trojans in one season with a 12-win season that saw the team win the Sun Belt Championship and the 2022 Cure Bowl. Troy was led by a great defense that held opponents to 17.5 points per game and 325.6 yards per game. With many departures on that side of the ball, the offense could be asked to lead the way. That starts with the quarterback. . .

Returning Watson

While some other teams in the state have quarterback questions, that is not an issue for the Trojans. With Gunnar Watson returning for a sixth season Troy has one of the most experienced signal callers in college football. The 2023 season will be the first time that Watson should be looked upon as the unquestioned starter. Last season, Watson split time with Jarret Doege for the first half of the season. Doege is now in the Canadian Football League. Watson finished fifth in the Sun Belt with 2,818 yards and had a completion percentage of 62%. He also had 14 touchdown passes on the year, and his best performance was in the Sun Belt Championship Game against Coastal Carolina. In the 45-26 win he passed for 318 yards and three touchdowns.

Who is the backup?

The question is who will be the backup to Watson? Troy had a lot of quarterbacks play in the 2023 T-Day Game. J.D. Sherrod, Tucker Kilcrease of Brantley, Goose Crowder, Jameson Holcomb, and Quayde Hawkins all got playing time in the annual event. Crowder is a West Virginia transfer and has the most in-game action of the names listed. It is very limited action though. Last season against Towson he was six out of six for 57 yards and one touchdown. Sherrod, Kilcrease, and Holcomb are all freshmen. Quayde Hawkins left the team after the spring by way of the transfer portal.
