BLAKELY, Ga. — The City of Blakely has lifted a local emergency declaration that was put in place following an increase in gun violence involving adults and children.
According to the city, the emergency was declared July 28 after two aggravated assaults involving firearms.
The first happened July 22 and involved adults and children. Another aggravated assault involving a firearm and both adults and children happened July 26.
Following the incidents, the city declared a local emergency, imposed a curfew beginning at midnight and prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages after 11 p.m.
The Blakely City Council has now voted unanimously to lift the emergency declaration.
The curfew is no longer in effect, and licensed businesses may resume alcohol sales during normal business hours established by city ordinance.
The city said the mayor and council will hold future meetings regarding the increase in gun violence in Blakely.
