HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WDNews) — A man has been arrested in connection with the April 2026 shooting death of a 6-year-old child, according to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.
Jimmy Myers is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and leaving a loaded firearm within the reach of a child.
Deputies responded to a home on Twin Lake Drive after receiving a report that a child had been shot. Deputies provided aid until Holmes County EMS arrived. The child was taken for medical treatment but later died from the injuries.
Investigators said Myers and the child’s mother used methamphetamine a couple of hours before the shooting. The mother later went to a nearby camper, leaving Myers at the home with the 6-year-old and a 7-year-old sibling.
According to investigators, Myers showed the 7-year-old a firearm and allowed the child to handle it. Myers then reportedly left the loaded gun on a bed while he took a shower.
Investigators said the 7-year-old picked up the gun and entered a bedroom where the 6-year-old was located. The gun discharged, striking the younger child.
Toxicology results showed Myers tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators conducted interviews, executed search warrants and reviewed physical evidence, forensic findings and toxicology results. The completed case was presented to the State Attorney’s Office before a warrant was issued for Myers’ arrest.
The investigation remains ongoing.
