ATLANTA (WDNews) — The law enforcement arm of the Internal Revenue Service is recruiting new special agents as the agency works to keep up with increasingly complex financial crimes.
IRS Criminal Investigation, known as IRS-CI, announced the national recruitment effort this week. Applications will remain open through Aug. 27.
“IRS Criminal Investigation special agents are building rewarding and challenging careers that make a real difference for taxpayers and the nation,” said Demetrius Hardeman, special agent in charge of the IRS-CI Atlanta Field Office. “Agents work every day to protect the integrity of the tax system and ensure fairness for all. Those who are committed to public service and ready to tackle complex financial investigations are encouraged to apply and join this mission-driven agency.”
Special agents investigate tax fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes. IRS-CI is the only federal law enforcement agency with investigative jurisdiction over criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code.
The agency said additional agents are needed as financial crimes become more sophisticated.
External applicants must now complete a pre-employment assessment as part of the application process. The Office of Personnel Management provides information and practice assessments to help applicants prepare.
IRS-CI said special agents receive federal salary and locality pay, health and life insurance options, retirement benefits, paid annual and sick leave and access to the Thrift Savings Plan. Agents also receive specialized training and opportunities for career advancement.
IRS-CI currently has 2,189 special agents working in 16 U.S. field offices and 13 overseas attaché posts.
