DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — A Dothan High School student’s award-winning message about the dangers of speeding is headed to television stations across the country.

According to Dothan City Schools, student Stephen Colvin earned first place in the 2026 National Road Safety Foundation PSA Challenge.

As part of his first-place prize, Colvin’s original public service announcement concept will be professionally produced at Dothan High School on Thursday, Sept. 24. The finished PSA is expected to later air on more than 160 television stations nationwide.

The National Road Safety Foundation’s 2026 PSA Challenge asked high school students ages 13 to 19 to develop an original public service announcement showing how speeding can turn a split-second decision into a life-changing crash.

Students were challenged to create a video of two minutes or less presenting their idea. The top 10 submissions each received $250. The first-place winner received an additional $2,500 and the opportunity to have the winning concept professionally produced and aired nationwide.

“This opportunity is not only a major accomplishment for Colvin and Dothan City Schools, but also a proud moment for the entire Dothan community,” Dothan City Schools said. “Having a student created message professionally produced in Dothan and shared with a national television audience puts a spotlight on the talent and creativity of our students.”

The district added, “DCS is incredibly proud of Colvin for using his voice and creativity to promote a message that has the potential to make a difference and save lives.”

On Thursday, Colvin will watch as a professional production crew turns his winning concept into a broadcast-ready PSA.

Filming will take place throughout Dothan High School and will feature Colvin, other DHS students and a teacher serving as actors in the production.
