MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDNews) — Alabama will recognize Saturday, Sept. 26, as National Hunting and Fishing Day following a proclamation signed by Gov. Kay Ivey.

According to Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, the day is meant to celebrate the state’s hunting and fishing traditions and encourage people to spend time outdoors.

“A day to celebrate hunting & fishing!? Count us in!” the agency said.

In the proclamation, Ivey noted Alabama’s long history of hunting and angling and their role in conservation across the state. The proclamation says Alabama sportsmen and women generated $72.8 million last year through the American System of Conservation Funding to support conservation efforts by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The proclamation also states that about 1.1 million hunters and anglers support Alabama’s economy through their spending, contributing to $7.3 billion spent on outdoor activities in the state last year.

National Hunting and Fishing Day was established in 1972 to recognize hunters and anglers and their contributions to fish and wildlife conservation.

Wildlife officials are encouraging Alabamians to take part in activities such as dove, squirrel, rabbit and pig hunting or fishing.

“September 26th! Get outside. Make some memories and keep the tradition going!” the agency said.
